I would like to introduce you to my son Jonathan. He is one of the lights of my life. This is him at 9 months old. He was a very active, fun loving child. He loved playing and hanging with his sister. Where ever she went he was right behind or beside her. They were two peas in a pod.
At about the age of 2 something changed, The happy little boy was still happy but was not developing like the other children. He wouldn’t talk and would always point. If he wanted something he would point. When he started pre-k in 2002, his first 2 days were spent in-school suspension. When I dropped him off at school he would drop to the ground and start crying. I thought he was just shy and having a tantrum. Well he soon adjusted and was going to school like every other child. When I had the first parent teacher conference I was shocked. The teacher informed me that there was something wrong with Jonathan and we needed to get him to a doctor. I asked her to explain to me why she felt this way. “He will not talk or communicate. When I ask him his colors or shapes he does not answer me.” At which time I had Jonathan, who had been in the classroom with me, come and I asked him to bring me the “blue plate” and he did. The teacher was amazed. She stated they can not get him to do that and she feels like it is more than just being shy. So we took her advice and this began our long journey. I took him right away to his pediatrician. He informed me that he felt that Jonathan was suffering from “selective mustism”.
The definition of selective mutism:
Selective mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder in which a person who is normally capable of speech does not speak in specific situations or to specific people. Selective mutism usually co-exists with shyness or social anxiety.
So he referred us to one of only two specialists between Jacksonville and Tampa. At the time they diagnosed him with severe anxiety disorder, mood disorder, selective mutism and sleep disorder. Along the way several EEG testings and many changes in medicines, finally in 2007 he was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, mood disorder, anxiety.
Aspergers definition is as follows: A developmental disorder affecting ability to effectively socialize and communicate. It has been almost 8 years and Jonathan is becoming a man. His passion has changed from trains to flags and Nascar. He loves flagging for the New Smyrna Kart Klub. He practices almost everyday and is involved with special olympics. I can’t wait to see where his passions take him and how far his dreams will go… ❤ ❤ ❤
